Embracing WOKE

When used as a verb, the infinitive of WOKE is ”TO WAKE,” which means not sleeping or becoming alert. By the mid-1920s, the word had come to mean “aware.” Around 2010, the definition expanded again. WOKE developed a new colloquial meaning -- “socially and politically active.” Its meaning is determined by the way it is used and by whom. Since its implications are evolving, I’d like to get in on the act.

I’d like to think of myself as WOKE in the sense of being awake to possibilities. When I read, I want to be involved so that I grow as a human, that I expand my language, and increase my knowledge. When I write, I want to do the same thing.

When you go on the 2024 Red Engine Press cruise, it is my hope that you will stay WOKE to what you see and learn. Stay alert to what you hear and experience on the journey. You will have the opportunity to write and post daily, Please do. Whatever you post helps other people wake up to new experiences. In fact, start posting NOW and it will become a familiar habit.

Stay WOKE to the world around you. Learn and thrive.
