Rudy H. Garcia and Pat McGrath Avery wrote an excellent book on the history of shrimping in the Port Isabel-Brownsville area of Texas which won the 2020 award in nonfiction from The Authors’ Zone (TAZ). It is filled with information on shrimping and interviews with some of the families who participated.
According to the book, farm-raised shrimp do not compare in taste to ocean raised shrimp. The introduction mentions different kinds of shrimp and their size, quality, and freshness. Wild-caught shrimp are preferred.
Also in the introduction, the book tells the history of the shrimping industry in Port Isabel and Brownsville, Texas. There are chapters on the state of shrimping, the shrimp boat, and fascinating facts.
Several shrimping families were interviewed for Shrimp Tales. The stories are told of men who spent most of their lives at sea. Some remember the beginnings of shrimping, and some recall the fish houses, restaurants, and streets where they grew up.
The book is very interesting and well written. It’s obvious that a lot of research went into the information shared.
A second book is now out about the women of shrimping. If it is written with the same care that this volume was written, it will also be a success.
